The European Commission has launched a new significant initiative, the “Cultural Compass,” which aims to improve the cohesion of EU policies and strengthen coordination between funding and policy. The creation of a strong and united European Union has become necessary, with culture and cultural heritage being fundamental elements of the EU’s identity and values.
This initiative will, among other things:
- Promote the EU’s actions to support the diverse culture of Europe and its rich cultural heritage
- Improve the working conditions of artists and cultural professionals
- Unlock the competitive potential of the cultural and creative sectors
A productive exchange of views with the EU member states took place during the Informal Ministerial Council in Warsaw on April 8, 2025, focusing on the key guiding principles for EU policy in the cultural sector, which will be integrated into the future “Cultural Compass.” Member states supported the intrinsic value of culture and the need to ensure artistic freedom, safeguard cultural diversity and cultural heritage, and enhance the resilience of the sector, with the contribution of digital technology to readiness and accessibility in culture.
Participants also referred to artists and creators as key assets and supported the establishment of legislation to facilitate their working conditions, ensure fair remuneration, and improve social protection. Finally, they unanimously emphasized the role of culture in building democracy, well-being, and health in societies, raising the issue of integrating the cultural dimension into EU policies and cultural diplomacy.
It is worth noting that the public consultation will run until May 30, 2025, aiming to facilitate the participation of member states in designing the future EU cultural policy strategy.
