On 29 and 30 April 2025, the EUIPO hosted two important events in Alicante related to the fight against live event piracy. The first was the fourth meeting of the Network of National Administrative Authorities on Live Event Piracy, and the second was a conference titled “Strengthening the Fight Against Online Piracy of Sports and Other Live Events – Assessing Progress and Challenges.”
On 29 April, during the fourth meeting of the Network, the EUIPO and the European Commission provided an update on the progress of their work under the Commission’s Recommendation on Combating Online Piracy of Live Events. Representatives from national authorities exchanged information and experiences on addressing live event piracy. Members were informed about national legislative developments and emphasized the importance of information-sharing mechanisms related to live event piracy, including opportunities for further cooperation in tackling online piracy. Greece participated in the meeting, represented by Deputy Director Ms. Dafni Papadopoulou and lawyer Ms. E. Moustaka.
Subsequently, on 30 April, the second Conference on Live Event Piracy took place, following up on the Live Event Piracy Symposium held on 9–10 October 2023. The conference brought together public and private stakeholders who assessed progress since the adoption of the Recommendation and discussed new developments, challenges, and solutions. Various existing collaborations between stakeholders were presented, offering a clearer picture of the mechanisms available to combat live event piracy and contributing to better mutual understanding across sectors. The discussion highlighted the different approaches being taken and the importance of targeting live event piracy within the current legal framework. During the conference, the Deputy Director presented the latest legislative developments at the national level, particularly regarding live blocking measures and the expansion of their scope.
