WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center to increase cases in out-of-court dispute resolution by 2024

In 2024, the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Arbitration and Mediation Center (WIPO AMC) was involved in the resolution of 858 intellectual property (IP) disputes, innovation and technology, an increase of 25% by 2023.

These cases, involving parties from around the world, were resolved through WIPO’s services, in particular Mediation, Arbitration, Expedited Arbitration, Special Determination and Good Offices. For the management of disputes, particularly those related to copyright and digital rights, use was made of WIPO’s eADR platform, as well as videoconferencing systems.

Among the 287 disputes referred to procedures under the WIPO Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Rules, 48% concerned copyright and digital content, 29% trademarks and 10% patents. The main professional sectors involved in these disputes were the creative industries, in particular collective management, video games, entertainment and software.

The AMC reported a 700% increase in copyright and digital content disputes over the past five years, including disputes involving internet platforms and search engines.

In addition, there was significant activity in areas such as ICT, life sciences, luxury goods and green technology.
