The publishing industry consists of a huge variety of different types of publications, including books, magazines, newspapers, sheet music and songbooks. These are published in both physical copies and digital formats. The primary objective of this publication is to provide information to policymakers by considering appropriate legislative responses to broad copying and communication with society.

The HCO successfully participated in the 19th Thessaloniki International Book Fair, which took place on May 4-7, 2023, with its own exhibition stand and speeches by HCO officials on the topic “Copyright and Books”, which took place on Friday, May 5, in the “ALKI ZEI” hall and attracted the interest of the attendees at the International Fair.
The European Commission on May 4 2023, adopted a Recommendation on how to combat commercial scale online piracy of sports and other live events, such as concerts and theatre performances. It encourages Member States, national authorities, holders of rights and providers of intermediary services to take effective, balanced and appropriate measures to fight unauthorized retransmissions of such streaming, in full compliance with fundamental rights and personal data protection rules. By stepping up the fight against online piracy, the Recommendation will contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the EU sport and creative industries.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has published its 2023 Special 301 Report on the adequacy and effectiveness of IPR protection and enforcement by US trading partners. The annual report outlines USTR’s findings for more than 100 U.S. trading partners after significant research and stakeholder conversations.

World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated every year on 26 April. The day was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to inform and raise public awareness about the role that intellectual property rights (IPR) play in promoting innovation and creativity.
In this case, two Romanian collective management organizations handling copyright and related rights over musical works brought actions against the air transport company Blue Air Aviation and the CFR, a Romanian rail transport company, seeking payment of remuneration still due and of penalties for the broadcasting, without a license, of musical works on board aircraft and passenger carriages.
