On 8 December 2023 a meeting of the European Parliament took place, where MEPs reached a political agreement with the Council, which aims to ensure that fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability are protected from high-risk AI, while strengthening innovation and making Europe a leader in the sector. The rules establish obligations for artificial intelligence based on its potential risks and level of impact.
Regarding general AI systems, and in order to take into account the wide range of tasks they can perform, it was agreed that these systems should comply with the transparency requirements originally proposed by Parliament. These include writing technical documentation, complying with EU copyright law and disseminating detailed summaries of content used for training.
The agreed text will then have to be formally approved by both the Parliament and the Council to become EU law.
Parliament’s Internal Market and Civil Liberties committees will vote on the deal at an upcoming meeting.
