European Commission: Developments in the Artificial Intelligence sector

  • European Artificial Intelligence Act comes into force

On August 1st the European Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), the world’s first comprehensive regulation on artificial intelligence, entered into force. The AI Act is designed to ensure that AI developed and used in the EU is trustworthy, with safeguards to protect people’s fundamental rights. The regulation aims to establish a harmonized internal market for AI in the EU, encouraging the uptake of this technology and creating a supportive environment for innovation and investment.

Member States have until 2 August 2025 to designate national competent authorities, who will oversee the application of the rules for AI systems and carry out market surveillance activities. The Commission’s AI Office will be the key implementation body for the AI Act at EU-level, as well as the enforcer for the rules for general-purpose AI models.

  • AI Act: Public Consultation on trustworthy general-purpose AI models under the AI Act.

The European AI Office is launching a multi-stakeholder consultation on trustworthy general-purpose AI models under the AI Act.

The consultation is an opportunity for all stakeholders to have their say on the topics covered by the first Code of Practice, which will detail out rules for general-purpose AI model providers.

The AI Office invites submissions from a broad range of stakeholders, including academia, independent experts and industry representatives such as general-purpose AI model providers or downstream providers integrating the model into their AI systems, civil society organizations, rightsholders, and public authorities.

The consultation is available in English and responses can be submitted until Tuesday 10 September 2024, 18:00 (Central European Time).
