WIPO presented a global survey on the perception, awareness and attitudes of the general population with respect to intellectual property rights (WIPO Pulse – Global intellectual property perception survey 2023).
WIPO Pulse is the first survey in the world to examine the awareness and perceptions of the population regarding intellectual property (IP) on an international scale. The results provide insights based on the responses of 25,000 people in 50 countries in the following regions: a) Western Europe and other countries, b) Latin America and the Caribbean, c) Eastern Europe, d) Asia Pacific, e) Africa.
Among its findings, the survey shows that 66.4% of respondents in all regions recognize the positive impact of IP on the economy and IP is seen as a key tool to ensure fair income for individual innovators, creators, authors and designers. This impact is mostly felt in the Asia-Pacific region (76%), Africa (70%) and the Latin America and Caribbean region (67%).
An important piece of WIPO Pulse data shows that people aged 18 to 24 lag behind in understanding IP compared to the general population. While almost a third (32%) understand copyright and geographical indications (27%), only 2 in 10 know about patents (18%) and designs (19%).
The results from the global south are particularly encouraging, showing that IP can be a powerful tool not only for industrialized countries but also for developing and less developed countries.
The survey shows that the highest awareness is in copyright, surpassing trademarks, geographical indications, patents and designs.
