This year’s 17th Session of WIPO Advisory Committee on Enforcement (ACE), held in Geneva from 4 to 6 February, included a variety of topics on awareness raising on IP and online piracy and enforcement.
Initially, there were exchanges of information on national experiences related to awareness-building activities and strategic campaigns aimed at fostering respect for intellectual property (IP) among the general public, particularly the youth.
In addition, ACE focused on tackling the complex issue of online piracy through effective site blocking strategies. Experts from various countries and organizations gathered to share their experiences and best practices. The role of intermediaries, particularly internet service providers (ISPs), was discussed extensively. Their involvement is vital in implementing website-blocking orders, especially in combating music piracy.
Dr. Maria Daphne Papadopoulou, Acting Director of the Hellenic Copyright Organization (HCO), presented the role and work of the Hellenic Administrative Committee for Combatting Online Piracy of Live Events. The Committee focuses on overseeing administrative procedures to address online copyright and related rights infringements. Their efforts aim to provide right holders with prompt and effective relief by removing or blocking access to infringing online content.
Overall, ACE’s 17th Session provided valuable insights and best practices that will help countries and organizations enhance their strategies to combat online piracy and protect intellectual property rights effectively.
