EUIPO – Report on the impact of the Metaverse on infringement and enforcement of intellectual property

The Report aims to highlight the potential implications of the Metaverse (virtual reality-based digital space) in the field of intellectual property and how related technologies can be misused for infringement and crimes against intellectual property.

It suggests ways to adapt and evolve the techniques and strategies traditionally used to enforce intellectual property to address the challenges of the Metaverse.

It is emphasized that, among others, the potential weaknesses and vulnerabilities of a Metaverse ecosystem will allow illegal activity to occur in infrastructure, information systems and intellectual property.

The deep dive report also contributes to the Observatory’s efforts to support the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT), in which crime against intellectual property is a special priority.
